Bagpipe Gaita workshop/ Taller

During our VIII FIMIV we had several gaita workshops with prof. Kiko Montero de Muinheiros do Sarela de Santiago de Compostela (Galicia), who taught us many little tricks to start playing as we have to do the traditional galician gaita.

Now, with Paulo Bahamonde (Tafechu) and the Centro cultural Amigos de Galicia we are about to start a Gaita school/workshop for any one interested on saturday morning starting at the end of January.... So if you like this sound and you want to learn to play some tunes we ahve the way through our workshop..... Other kind of bagpipes in 440 as the asturian, french cornemuses, border pipes, some smallpipes etc. (see my colecction bellow) are welcome too to do a sideline workshop if there is a minimun number of interested people.....

It is dificult to find good paper references these days. Even the libraries are outcasting the old encyclopedias and the like references for the new digital versions of the same subjects.

So what is better? the encyclopedic dictionary or the old monographic style encyclopedia?.... we have not solved the problem so we gather both.... and a third style the thematic encyclopedia....

At the end there is no space left for the paper and we trend to use the digital releases of the same books but it seems to have lower results as a learning tool.... what will have ahead in Valpo...... libraries are few and they are not usually use friendly...... chileans are known as a average poor readers.... our vocabulary also is poor..... lack of reading some say.....

The average chilean has less than 3 books at home..... no way it is going to have a reference work which reflect our current poor language skills....

Duoc L. Cousiño/La Ratonera inauguration

The Luis Cousiño Building inauguration by the DUOC UC foundation school also known as a destroyed rubble named la ratonera was really a blast, recreating the surrounding street with near 400 actors as it was around the 1900s, the belle époque of Valparaiso.
This was a famous building inaugurated the first time around 1883.
Our crew from the centro cultural Placeres as they were just before 1900s.
The leading players of the cultural center impersonating a widow and a herbalist folk vendor.

Orellana Bookstore demise

Another blow for our city, Librería Orellana, along with Libreria Ivens, is perhaps the oldest bookstore in town..... Last week it just closed down. Surviving bookstores left.... you can count them with one hand...... and this is a city with over a quarter million inhabitants..... Oh tempora Oh mores.

Saint Patrick day in Valpo has a main place to gather irish music and green beer.... El Irlandés.... with a very noisy crowd were the only unamplified instruments able to be heard are the bagpipes.

This thursday is a busy day, bagpiping all around the place for St. Patrick festivities starting playing galician gaitas, scottish border pipes, scottish & english smallpipes plus a german dudelsack hummelchen at the Colegio inglés San Patricio (Viña del Mar) in the morning. At noon at the Escuela de Administración de la Universidad de Valparaiso, later in the evening at the SSR chapel to end the day at the wild party at Bar el Irlandés......

Tornamesa autoiris show in Valpo

Just an invitation to visit this exhibition starting with the opening this coming friday at 18 hrs.

7 cars representing diferent hill neighbourhoods were painted during a large street parade last January and its results as a photographic and film show will be shown here.

Desde el viernes 18 de marzo y hasta el 03 de abril, se podrá ver la instalación “Autoiris, de Marsella a Valparaíso”, retrospectiva visual del espectáculo homónimo presentado en Enero, en el marco del Festival de las Artes. Parte de la exposición es la llamativa instalación de 7 autos suspendidos en el cielo que quedaron colgando de una estructura metálica luego de un final sorprendente, con pirotécnica y efectos especiales, el 29 de enero pasado en la ex Maestranza Barón. Las 7 organizaciones culturales y comunitarias barriales que participaron del espectáculo adaptado para Valparaíso, serán parte de la retrospectiva, para dar cuenta del proceso participativo que se llevó a cabo con los franceses de Générik Vapeur. Las agrupaciones Centro Cultural Playa Ancha, TAC, Teatro Museo del Títere y el Payaso, Taller El Litre, Centro Cultural Joaquin Edwards Bello, Centro Cultural Brujas de la Kalahuala y Centro Cultural Placeres serán los responsables de la instalación durante las 3 semanas en que se abre el espacio Tornamesa al público.

Giant Puya flowering in Valpo

España & Altamirano as well as in many slopes in the surrounding dry hills grows this big native plant Puya chilensis, who knows why, it grows tall yellow inflorecences reaching the higher tree dimension up to 8-10 meters.... I sight not to be missed while in Valpo this summer.

Whale paleo sites versus waste disposal

In the surroundings of Las Ventanas are located the thermoelectric companies that supply with energy to Valpo- Viña and a good portion of the region. The current problem starting to show up is where they could bury their burned waste coal.
Gener, one of the energy companies has bought some areas inland where they pretend to build a landfill for their waste.....
The problem, the area is covered with fossiliferous outcrops around crevasses containing fossil whale remains where they pretend to fill their waste.... so far they cann't do it because the chilean Consejo de monumentos nacionales has given a warning because fossil sites like this are protected by chilean law 17288.
Nevertheless, we don't know what is going to happen..... the legal fight is going to go on....
and these whales still unstudied in situ.... could be buried by coal waste, being lost for ever for our heritage history.Fossil whale sites are rather scarce worldwide.... the oldest are known in the paskistani Kashmir from where the earlier proto-whales are known..... On our side of the Pacific the fossil sites around Nasca are perhaps the better known. Even though chilean whale fossils are known from some sketchy XIX century Philippi's descriptions, just recently Chilean sites are being surveyed with extraordinary findings in massive outcrops around Caldera. In Viña, in the 80s a fossil whale was found in the surroundings of a brick factory in the today poshy Reñaca neighbourhood and it was partially rescued by Museo Fonck. Of course, the site was lost for urban development. This time, these unstudied fossil outcrops are larger, and the menace is industrial and environmental.....what is going to happen?

Old fashion reference works like encyclopedias, dictionaries, handbooks and the like are beginning to disappear from homes vis-a-vis newer multimedia and internet reference sources. Nevertheless, even with e-books at hand we have discovered that the ability to process new knowledge when is electronically delivered seems to be slower or lighter as compared with the paper. Therefore, the general out of fashion & outdated paper reference works start to be the gain of some people like us... bibliophiles who collect classic general reference items like Encyclopedia Britannica, Collier´s, Salvat, Larousse or Americana for a very low price tag.
Valparaíso, Santiago and B. Aires are good places to get hold of copies of Spanish language general encyclopedias like Monitor (1970s), Espasa-Calpe (1950s-90s), Salvat (1970s-2000s), Durvan (1970s-1980s), Hispanica (1990s-2000s), Oceano (1990s-2000s) and Sopena (1960-70s); English language references like Britannica (1911-1990s), Collier's (1960s), World book (1960s-80s), and less frequently French and German language like Brockhaus (1950s-70s) or Larousse (1960s-90s).
Oceano published in the 90s even a 4 volume Enciclopedia de Chile that often is found in used bookstores and flea markets.... the places to look for used books in Valpo: Feria La Merced in plaza O'higgins, sector Bellavista esq. Blanco; used bookstores at Cumming street, San Ignacio esq. P.Montt, P. Montt facing the congress building next to the Rodoviario bus station, and Av. Independencia esq. Gral. Cruz.
So if you like reading and you have space at home try classic reference works you might enjoy.... Otherwise, we always have some available copies for trading. Interested mainly in natural history, science, & earth science...so if you have any questions contact us.

Autoiris at Festival de las artes 2011

The Autoiris rainbow painting street project by the Generik vapeur troupe was an amazing success within the framework of the new old Festival de las artes last saturday.... It was the only street venue within the festival this year.... The idea was to paint on a street parade 7 old Fiat 600 cars representing 7 hill neighbourhoods (AKA cerros) around town.

My cerro is Placeres, and as a member of their centro cultural I played the bagpipes along the parade mixing my sound with the electronic musical flavour given by the musicians of the Generik vapeur troupe while my comrades painted the car blue....
Indeed saturday evening was a blast.......

Restoring instruments/ arreglando instrumentos

I wonder how an instrument collection changes through time.... catch and release policy I guess.... Since the photo taken 5 years ago my collection has changed over 10% I suppose.... new old axes to restore and most of them to release.... now with a croatian gusli, a palestinian rehab and a chilean/spanish octavina to complete their fixing through our southern summer

and adding/fixing galician, scottish and medieval bagpipes. All of them available for workshops too.

Looking for books in Viña

Books are rather an expensive item in Chile so book fares like the one organised at the Liceo de Niñas de Viña for 29 years in a row are a good opportunity to get some books for a good price.... of course, it is a small but indeed is what we get every summer overhere.
A different matter are private libraries like my friend Geraldo Ojeda library (above) or like myself (below) who like many others, we look for used bargains at the Feria de la Merced (Plaza O'Higgins) or Av Argentina flea markets every weekend.

Nigerian Choir in Valpo

Maria Celia Toledo brings us her 30 strong voices of theNigerian Choir Amemuso (Abuja metropolitan Music society) that last year performed here their version of Bizet's Carmen sung in French, Yoruba and Ygbo languages. This year they are performing their new version of the Sound of Music play.... They have been performing around town since December 1th and will conclude with a open performance at the port's plaza Sotomayor this sunday 5th at 19 hrs.

Valpo still falling down

This past Saturday just before 14 hrs, those who were close to the municipal Theater heard a huge crash.... It was the falling of parts of a wall of a commercial building across in Uruguay street. One of the crowdest street in Valpo..... one of the latest aftermaths of the earthquake of February 27th past..... where our volunteer firemen had to run fast .
The problem.....no warning, no money for demolition... and lot of legal problems between owners, municipality and the goverment.... a reality we still have to face in the Almendral neighbourhood..... where we have plenty of buildings condemned but nobody is able to take and pay the bills for it.
At the end of the day, just before getting to the opening of the municipal theater at 7 pm, the firemen and the carabinero police had left and the street vendors (ilegal) had taken back the street as a new alley for their produce.... saying life as normal..... It is surreal.... but this is life in Valpo....

Valpo´s Theater opening..... the quake aftermath

As said earlier on this past weekend our local municipal theater was open to life after earthquake with two special shows on stage.... On the 20th, the french string quartet Diotima that made an outstanding rendition of classic and more contemporary music by J. Tolosa, A. Guarello and M. Ravel. They played without mics and the clear sweet voice of their instruments was heard in the large stage as they were close.... Indeed they proved that the theater's ceiling restoration did not hamper the original excellent acoustics of this stage.....

It's just a pity that just 120 people were attending to this performance.... some people said it was just the the Forum competition with the big open shows at the Plaza Sotomayor stage.....
On the 21th, we had a double programme with the opening of the local Gustos Reunidos ensemble restaging their Pablo Neruda's musical poetic work..... remarkable work of her soprano voice..... For the end of the night, we had the honour to hear Beatriz Pichi Malen, who with an amazing voice showed us the musical traditional singing of the mapuche people as well as along with her two musicians dancers the sounds of the Nature and her mapuche cosmovision.... This time, there were many more people attending the performance, among them members of local mapuche commmunities who cried singing Marichiweu to all the more energetic songs waving even a Mapuche flag.....
This time, The national Day of the Music this theater had the duende (magic) it had lost for a long time.... Like me, some friends who are involved in these musical cultural affairs like Pato Gonzalez, Pascuala Ilabaca, Jaime Frez.. We all saw an amazing view of the full Moon at the gates of the theater still intrigued by this woman, her life, her stories and her amazing voice....

back Valpo's municipal theater

In February 27th central Chile was shaken by a huge earthquake that produced many deaths, much destruction of all kinds, a large tsunami and much havoc with traditional buildings including schools, theaters, etc. especially in the area between Concepcion and Talca.... Nonetheless, even though Valparaiso area was more than 300 km north from the earthquake epicenter, major cities like Valpo and Viña were also deeply affected loosing in a single night all major theaters in the area including Valparaiso and Viña municipal teathers.... Finally, 8 months later today we are recovering for stage Valpo's Municipal theater...
Of course, we wonder if this building indeed is ready for real staging of musical venues.... We will discover this tonight with the french string quartet Diotima, a petit musical luxury to open this stage, continuing tomorrow night with the best known mapudungun language singer Beatriz Pichi Malén singing along with Gustos Reunidos ensemble.... something not to be missed...

Those who helped us, thank you so much ..... we have been blessed through the years with your aid and attendance to the venues we organise.... Of course, a larger Thank you to our fellow musicians who every year applicate to our festival being represented this year by Ignacio Hernández, banda de gaitas de la colectividad asturiana de Valparaiso, Cuarteto celta, Andes celta, & Manush .... Even though there is a well known local music ensemble in our city (Ars antiqua), Renaissance music is not common to be heard live in our region, so to attend to a concert of this kind of music is rather an exceptional happening. These youngsters of the Ensamble de dos tiempos from Punta Arenas (Magallanes) are doing these days an amazing rendition of old spanish, french, italian and english repertoire in a series of 3 shows in Valpo, U. Féte de la Musique en Valpo

Like in Europe this coming weekend we are going to have in Valpo our Fête de la Musique, a world street festival done for the second time in Valparaiso being delivered by musicians using all available public space in streets and squares every June 21th.
Choirs, acoustic and world music groups will be at Victoria square from noon onwards. Celtic bands at 18: 00 (Celtamericana, Remembranzas de Galicia). Classical, jazz and folk rock from 13:00 onwards. If rains shows up, then everything will move to El Huevo at Pudeto (Bellavista).

La Fête de la Musique, fue creada el 21 de junio de 1982, sobre la iniciativa del ministro francés de la época, Jack Lang. Empezó a “exportarse” en 1985 con motivo del Año Europeo de la Música. En menos de quince años, la Fête de la Musique ha sido llevada a cabo en los 5 continentes.
En 2009, más de 110 países y 430 ciudades se reunieron para celebrar la Fiesta de la Música. Esta gran manifestación popular y gratuita se dedica a todos los géneros musicales y se abre tanto a los artistas profesionales como a los músicos aficionados que quieren comprometerse.
Este evento internacional se desarrolló gracias a la implicación de la red cultural francesa en el extranjero y de los operadores locales, cada año más presentes (asociaciones, ayuntamientos, gobiernos…). We are piping & playing folk sessions in the Teleton por Chile for those who lost everything in the big earthquake last weekend.

Estamos coordinando en la zona con los bancos Chile y Santander a varios grupos partícipes de una session folk propuesta en facebook para animar a la gente en los bancos de la región con gaiteros escoceses y gallegos (Remembranzas de Galicia) para la tarde del sábado 6, terminando en el banco de Chile en Viña a las 20 hrs y de pasada podemos colaborar antes en alguna de las actividades propuestas en Valpo....partiendo esta noche.
Esencialmente una session se hace en espacios cerrados sin amplificación (perfecto para halls en bancos) y lo único que se requieren son sillas. Cosa distinta son las bandas de gaitas con sus grupos de baile que requieren espacio mayor, pero por presencia estos si que llenan cualquier espacio atrayendo gente para que llegue a las cajas, el cual es nuestro ánimo. pues al igual que la historia real del piedpiper de Hamelin podemos conducir a la gente para que llegue a las sucursales bancarias .....

PUCV Tuna Contest

The tuna are a rather odd folk musical tradition born in medieval Spain and implanted in South America as Estudiantinas after the Figaro estudiantina tour of 1880s. As proper tunas they established themselves singing and serenating with mandolins, bandurrias, laúds, guitars and tambourines recreating this tradition around 1960s and, as a result today, we have dozens of universitarian tunas around the country. In the last couple of decades, they have had plenty of gatherings in different cities of Chile plus two annual tuna festivals during the summer in Iquique and La Serena. These festivals were the only ones where examinations or contests were looked after. Now, we have a new one, exclusive for universitarian tunas representing their schools and excluding estudiantinas. Next friday 17 and saturday 18 at the Viña del Mar's Municipal theather, 19 hrs.

The Charles Darwin's bicentenary also is being celebrated in our region, place where Darwin lived over a year of his 5 year experience around the world on board of the HMS Beagle... recording our nature as is was around 1834-35. So today the botanist Jorge Redón tell us something about this darwinian heritage after 200 hundred years of his birth.

Gabriela en Valpo

Gabriela Mistral was born in the Elqui Valley (Coquimbo) exactly 120 years ago . She was the first latin american woman to get the Nobel prize for her poetry.... and many times she was in Valparaiso, when this port was the gateway to get to central Chile... so was her public letter asking that in case of returning to Chile she would like to live in Valpo or its surroundings.... With my Celtamericana's friends we did record the musical soundtrack for a documentary film on her life and later a CD remembering her poetry and her figure as a woman, teacher, etc. and now two years later.... today is her birthday.... something to celebrate..

Piping for others

Piping means sometimes to do a service for others.... so I do it regularly for church service in funerals, masses, and marriages, the firemen, and other benefits when requested.

From time to time with some of my friends from Remembranzas de Galicia pipeband informally (without uniforms and dancing group) we do play at gatherings, benefits, and other fiestas as we are requested to do it.... so it was the case last weekend for a benefit at the Locos x Viña.

Luthier's talk

An amazing talk showing new tendencies for the making of classical guitars was done at the school of music of the PUCV by Ricardo Louzao, who came to Valpo to deliver two concert guitars to guitar players from that school.... just listening its wonderful sound and looking this balsa wood and carbon fiber cross bracing as compared to standard fan bracing, it makes a world of difference for these mecano pampa guitars.

Summer break

January and February are the months when most chileans take their summer vacations. It's the time when the chilean school year is already over. Crowds go to the beaches, and there are many festivals and gatherings all over the country. It also happens in city ports like Valparaiso, where you could notice large cruising ships arriving to port carrying foreign tourists to exchange flights, carrying them in short tours to the wineries, visits to Santiago and the Andes. Nonethelelss, most of these foreign tourists stay in Santiago and Viña del Mar. The reason, the assummed belief that because Valparaiso is poorer, with their shabby shanties around the hills, lack of major touristic facilities, and dirtiness, then it is a unsafe place for tourists. Maybe no more than any other major cityport.... not a touristic city as the selfdeclared neighbouring Viña del Mar, but it is in the cultural venues feature where Valpo is in real debt. As many local people travel for their vacations to other places..... you don't see much done in Valpo after the Carnavales culturales along with the fireworks at the bay at the eve of the new year.... January has a Tango festival worth mentioning, but February is a real empty black hole without much activity but for some Santiago's venues on tour..... this is exemplified by the almost non existent venues for the local municipal theater and that most of all local cultural activity is centered at the neighbouring Viña del Mar. Anyway, I was one of those travellers going southwards reaching Aysen in Patagonia where I spent over one month working and also attending to patagonian traditional folk festivals around Cochrane, Villa Cerro Castillo, and Coyhaique.

Mexican voladores

An unique mexican ceremonial ritual has been going on twice a day at the plaza O'Higgins trought this weekend. They are the voladores totonacos de Papantla as we saw it dancing yesterday....

The instrument used to set the whole ceremonial rite is a small cane tabor pipe and a small drum that is played by the tamborilero while dancing at the top of a single 25 m tall maintop trunk.

Graduation time

As the end of the year is closing in graduation ceremonies are ubiquitous or almost everywhere. It is also the time of the year when the few bagpipers are required to play at these graduation ceremonies. Some schools such as the Mackay school require by tradition scottish bagpipers who besides one local piper are all members of the Santiago's Andes Highlanders pipeband. Other institutions use the asturian or galician pipers to fullfill the bagpiping requirement. So in the last two couple of weeks local bagpipers have been playing Auld Lang Syne, Gaudeamus Igitur and the like for graduations at primary schools, high schools and social academies where the piercing sound of the pipes is looked after to give a solemnity air to say farewell to the school year.

English Carols at St. Paul's

Lastnight, there was a Service of Carols and readings for Christmas based on the traditional "Nine lessons with carols" service held at the King´s college chapel, Cambridge at now held at St. Paul's church, Cerro Concepción. The carols were sung by the school choirs of the local british school association with organ/piano accompaniment. Indeed, the atmosphere of the older anglican church, its acoustic and organ helped to keep this reading and musical service with a nice and homely feeling that helped to make it an oustanding service, endeavour organised by the local british community.

Next sunday 21th, 10:30 am. there will be another Christmas reading service for Viñamarinos at St. Peter's church, Blest Gana St., two blocks from Viña metro station.

Festival at barrio Puerto

It is quite interesting to note that the older barrio puerto is still considered a dangerous neighbourhood of town. This stigma around the neighbourhood surrounding the docks at the puerto have been almost always there. Formerly was the red light district or barrio chino. Many names to describe the precarious way of life and especially night life present there. For foreign sailors was the way of life they were acustomed to find in main ports. It was their sailor town.... Nowadays, current foreign navy sailors may have it even as Valpo's red light off limit zone like is was recommended not long ago for an US navy task force visiting town.

Now, local citizens want to claim back their barrio with a music festival next Thurday at plaza Echaurren from 15 hrs. onwards.

Bier tasting

Biers have been made in Chile since 1829, when the irishman Andrew Blest started to brew his own make for his friends and customers in Valparaiso. Later on, from 1850s onwards the german traditional biers started to be made in Valdivia and Valparaiso. Since those years, chilean biers have had their up and downs with the consolidation of a single holding company CCU who bought most makers throught the XX century. The results, just a few years ago only very few types of biers.... maybe 6 with the Lager pilsener style with Cristal and Escudo brands, and the darker bitter Malta Morenita making for most of all biers available in the country. Nowadays, CCU along with Cervecerias Chile and Brahma are the big boys, but over 60 smaller biermakers are doing different style biers in Chile. Among them are Cervecera del Puerto in Valpo and Kross in Curacaví.... Therefore, in order to know about these biers and the many today available imported from overseas it make necessary to try out the new and old biers with a new perspective like the monthly bier tasting held at the Bar El irlandés with master biermakers such as Asbjorn Gerlach from Kross who made us taste good high octanage alcoholic biers lastnight.... a real try......
We started with biers with just over 6 alcoholic degrees and we ended with biers with 10.5 to over 12%. A lot of them different, some almost superb.... really good Centenario and Bock kross, plus a number of belgian and german styles....
We started with five different biers
And when I left we had tried out at least 7 more.

Valpo, a crabby type locality

A while ago I found out that a whole generic group of crabs had been named after me. So, it was quite surprising to find Chirinocarcinus as a name for a new genus of xhantoid crabs. I had been honoured because I had done some work on other crustaceans before describing some new species such as the big deep-sea crab Chaceon chilensis (photo above) living off Valparaiso all the way to Easter and Juan Fernandez islands plus a few fossil south american species. Doing these studies I had to check the historical localities where many species had been collected and I found out that for many of the older ones the type locality for the holotype of the species was Valparaiso. So among other chilean localities, Valparaiso has a curious distinctive feature to be cited as the most frequent chilean type locality for many animal and botanical species, especially those from the seashore collected originally in the XIX century. This is especially true for marine invertebrates such as crabs that were the focus of my earlier learning on taxonomy. Probably, today nobody could collect most of those species found originally at Valparaiso because environmental change... i.e. pollution. Of course, despite fishing some of them still might be doing well because today there is more available food for them so there are more smaller detritus eating cancrid jaibas than in older times. Anyway, most of those fished here end in dishes such as the pastel de jaiba, but don't ask what they eat...

When sailing was the way

A hundred years ago even hundreds of sailing ships could be found at the Valparaiso's bay... At any time but winter you could see dozens of three, four and even the world's largest five masted ships at harbour.

One of the latest working caphonier sailing ships doing the trek around Cap Horn to Europe was the s.s. Calbuco (photo above), a german/chilean owned ship that had been carrying wood, coal, nitrates and other freewares as cargo along the chilean coast since the early twenties to the beginning of the II World War. Around that time (1942), it changed ownership, with a new chilean-german captain but retaining a good part of the chilean crew plus some new hands including my then teenager uncle Tito who went on board at Coquimbo to sail through the dangerous trek to one Europe in war. They had to do it twice, at the first try they had to get back after rounding the Horn because they were undermanned to hold its way sailing through the southern gales. The second time they made their way to Montevideo, place where the Graf von Spee battleship had found a temporary refuge from battle before being sunken against a british squadron in the southern Atlantic. There, realising what was going on, part of the chilean crew including my uncle got afraid of this adventure leaving the ship to go back to Chile overland. This ship continued with nitrate for Europe where the myth tell many hands were lost and still today in family circles I have heard the stories my dad told about my uncle's friends who never came back or even were heard of.... De ellos nunca más se supo....
The largest of these nitrate sailing ships visiting Valpo was the Preussen (photo above taken in Valpo around 1905). This was part of a large sailing fleet belonging to the german P Line or Laeisz company that along with the french Bordes Company were the largest world sailing companies both with main branches in Valpo.

Firemen memorial mass

Lastnight Valparaiso firemen recalled the names of those lost in service over more of 150 years of organised life in Valparaiso. It was 150 years ago when their first voluntary fireman, Eduardo Farley died in service in our port so Valparaiso's firemen attended in force to the yearly memorial mass for those lost in service.... way too many names especially those 36 lost at the 1953 new year fire... Remembering our deads

Once a year on the eve of November 1th most chileans visit their deads at the cemeteries. But this year it was different for our family because our father had passed away just two months earlier. This time, he wasn´t with us talking about what we were going to do together. Instead, we were talking about him, visiting him to change flowers weekly, playing bagpipes to him. so November 1th is the day when all families rehears their memories for those that has left earlier...

All saint´s day choir Concert

All Saints Day is a national holiday in Chile and, as in many other Latin American countries. despite the official dia de los difuntos is the next day 2th, it is also The Day of the Dead. Although less exuberant and macabre than in Mexico, celebrations take place widely in Chile too. People honour their forbears on this day; making offerings to their ancestor's souls at masses and gravesides, holding vigils at gravesides or building shrines to deceased loved ones. Events are usually unstructured and may take place anywhere from a private household to a public square or a cemetery. One of these are choirs singing at churches. The Sagrados Corazones church is perhaps one of the oldest churches with the best acoustic for organ and choir music in Valpo. So this free concert by the Advenir Choir with the U. de Chile orchestra is one that nobody should miss November 1th at 18 hr. Iglesia Sagrados Corazones, Independencia 2086.

Dreaming about bagpiping

In the last few weeks we have received news about bagpipe bands visiting Valparaiso. First, a month ago it was the aborted visit by the Banda de gaitas Ciudad de Oviedo (Asturias) and the Bagad de Lann Bihoué (Bretagne) is coming next week. We would like to support such efforts but too often we get news about these visits with little time to be able to help much really. Anyway, we are dreaming again about a future gathering within our Festival FIMIV with several foreign pipebands plus the few locals from Valparaiso (Remembranzas de Galicia y la Colectividad Asturiana de Valparaiso ), Santiago (Lar Gallego, Centro asturiano & Andes Highlanders pipeband), Antofagasta (Eagle high school), Temuco (Derradeiros), and Punta Arenas (Centro Español) in a sort of national gathering at our town.

Columbus day at estadio Español

On every October 12th or the closer weekend there is a great fiesta at the Estadio Español at Recreo where all the different colectividades (historical regions) from Spain show their folk traditions such as dance, music and foods.
Asturians and galicians were the noisier bunch who contributed with their lively bagpipe music and dancing. Of course, there are several flamenco dancing groups who represented the andalusian traditions too, but the already mentioned astur-galician bunch represented by Remembranzas de Galicia and the banda de gaitas y bailes asturianos were the ones who got the most kudos from the public.

Old Museum at the Seminary

Valparaiso area has only two natural history museums. The Natural History Museum at Valparaiso and the Museo Fonck at Viña del Mar. Both of them have as forebears two school museums started in the XIX century. One by the Sagrados Corazones school, dissapearing at the end of the century in Valpo, and now with some pieces of its collection located in their new premises in Viña, and the second, the Seminario San Rafael Museum still in the same old two story housing behind the current school at the end of Av. Argentina on the slope of the hill facing Santa Elena street.
The museum have the only natural history collections surviving two centuries of earthquakes and fires in the same place. It was inaugurated in 1884 as a gift by the Edwards family in a old house where the famous argentinean intelectual and politician Juan Bautista Alberdi lived as an exile some decades earlier. The original collections of stuffed animals from all the continents including big game from Africa are still like they were set in 1884. It has a large mineralogical collection (photo above) plus some archeological collection (photo below).
This museum is a very old fashion exhibition indeed a showcase of some kind of victorian style of showing natural history artifacts, minerals and animals at the end of the XIX century. This museum require curatorial work and soeme updating. older museum from the old world has done it why the Seminario San Rafael would not do it? Examples, there are many, the closer considering its affiliation might be the example given by the Museo geológico del Seminario de Barcelona. What to do to preserve and update this museum... the question is on....

Piping in Valpo

Spring is almost officially starting with paper kites (volantines) flying on the hills around Valpo and everybody else preparing to celebrate the chilean independence holidays within a fortnight... At the same time, the few bagpipers in town and surrounding areas are gathering to play music with their bagpipes in the outdoors. Two well organised pipebands are in town, both celebrating spanish folk bagpipe traditions. The Valparaiso asturian pipeband with their long single drone and closed chantered bagpipes (gaita asturiana) and the galician Remembranzas de Galicia pipeband with their traditional open chantered galician gaitas.... These bagpipes might look somewhat alike but they sound different because of their respective distinct reeds (palleta and pajuela) and chanters. So I am also playing galician style in the outdoors with a friend at the Baron docks (photo above). Tomorrow night many of these pipers will gather to celebrate the 4th Irlandés bar birthday party.... so if you hear them just relax they might be piping while celebrating with green beer and other stronger brews.

Immigrant's day celebration

In Chile and also in Valparaiso the local catholic church celebrates through its liturgy once a year the diversity provided by inmigrants from all over the world, this time represented by local communities from Italy, Jordan, Syria, Peru, Ecuador, Argentina, Spain, Greece, Germany, and the USA.

So this coming Sunday 7th at noon there will be a special service celebrating this diversity followed by folk dances by these communities. at plus a special presentation by Remembranzas de Galicia pipeband and dance group at the Corazón de Maria parish, Pocuro 834 with Av. Uruguay.

The carcel is back for concerts

The Old Jail is a strange public spot named as a cultural center on top of the Carcel hill. For a number of years there have been many artists doing workshops and from time to time doing concerts mostly organised around rock music. Nevertheless, for a while this public space has been in some kind of limbo off limits about its final demise or the new building of a cultural center based on a sketch by the famous brazilian architect Oscar Niemeyer... No many people agrees on this particular plan... So it is good news to listen that we do have new concerts back on that public space to defend it from what?.... Niemeyer plan, some other hidden agenda ? This week concert on saturday 16.

Rottweil accordeon orchestra in Valpo

Valparaiso has had its own unique Hohner accordeon orchestra since the late 1930s mixing popular and classical music in accordeon. So an accordeon orchestra is no a strange sound to locals... Therefore, this week we will have accordeon sounds perfoming Edvard Grieg, Curt Mahr, Rudolf Würthner & Dimitri Schostakowitsch music, among other authors by the german “Rottweil accordeon orchestra”, in a concert next friday August 15 at the USM aula magna, 19 hrs.
This 22 strong accordeon and string players ensemble was founded in 1985 at Rottweil, a german town founded by the romans 73 AC. Its 27 members are directors from other regional orchestras plus maestros and young talented accordeon players.

Artist's copyrights campaign

The artists affiliated with the chilean copyrights society (SCD) have started a campaign to fight for the new draft for a copyrights bill in Internet that is being discussed in the Chilean Congress. So far it looks like the big media corporations a doing a heavy lobbying here to free them from liability to pay for it when others are downloading for free. The SCD's earliest No mates la música campaign seems have not given fruits more than some public awareness on this subject. Now the subject is a bit more global and complex... internet.... who protects the author's copyrights in that media.... That is the fight is being addressed at the congress and since today at the gates of the Teatro municipal de Valparaiso (photos above).

Once again, after an 11 years long absence Flairck is coming back to Viña. This extraordinaire european ensemble mixes classical, jazz, folk & rock staging their music in a theatrical manner. This is their third visit to our region, being here before in 1995 and 1997 when they played with Franco Cabello, who once more will be playing as invited guest with his band Tribu with these 4 amazing musicians. Those who had the opportunity to listen Flairck live before have been moved and inspired by their unique music. This is an opportunity we shouldn't miss. Una verdadera fiesta de sonidos y color tendrán los seguidores de Flairck, banda que después de once años regresa a Chile para presentarse en el Teatro Caupolicán de Santiago y en el Teatro Municipal de Viña del Mar, los días 2 y 8 de agosto respectivamente.
Este versátil conjunto europeo mezcla estilos tan diversos como la música clásica, Jazz, folclore y rock, entre otros, y en su puesta en escena complementa melodías con la representación teatral. Esta es su tercera visita a nuestro país. Ya estuvieron en Santiago y Viña del Mar en 1995 y en 1997, año en que también deleitaron a sus fans con sus bellas composiciones. En ambas ocasiones fueron acompañados por el músico chileno Franco Cabello, quien nuevamente subirá con ellos al escenario Junto a su grupo Tribu.
Flairck se inició en 1978 y una de sus características principales radica en el uso de un sinfín de instrumentos de cuerda, viento y percusión descubiertos a lo largo de sus incontables giras. En sus recitales utilizan instrumentos japoneses, celtas, indios, chinos y andinos. Erik Visser, director musical del grupo, “el objetivo es conocer las costumbres, leyendas y tradiciones de cada país que visitan, para luego adaptarlas a sus creaciones y experimentar con los sonidos.
Con 30 años de trayectoria, estos geniales músicos han editado 22 discos, que incluyen música de circo, composiciones para orquesta sinfónica, obras para cantantes y obras instrumentales para ballet , entre otras. En cuanto a su discografía, los discos más difundidos en Chile son :”Live in Ámsterdam” , “Gevecht met de ángel” “Alive” y “The Chilean concert” .

Organ concerts in Valpo

Whereas in Viña you may find regular services using organ in a few churches such as the Benedectine church at Chorrillos. In Valpo, we do have just two churches where on a regular basis we might find a

organ concert or regular services using this complex and old instrument. These churches are the St Paul's Anglican church at Cerro Concepción and the Sagrados Corazones Church at Independencia Street. These two churches host two older instruments. The St Paul's anglican instrument made by Foster & Andrews (Hull) was dedicated to Queen Victoria before 1903. The Sagrados Corazones organ (photos above) is a french Airtide Cavaillé-Coll instrument brought by Pére Démarais to Valpo in 1871. It has 24 registers, 1380 pipes. It was restored after the 1906 earthquake, with the restoration of its original pipes mix of tin, lead and silver. The last restoration of its gear was done a couple of years ago. So if anyone would like to listen organ music you might drop at the anglican Church any sunday around 12:30 to follow a programme that is regularly scheduled in the web or more irregularly the Sagrados corazones church like next week on the 23th at 1900.

Santiago apóstol: Galician Fiesta in Valpo

Update 08/20/2008: The fiesta just ended with a great ceremonial queimada, gaita music and dancing by Remembranzas de Galicia and the people attending the fiesta.

The Centro Gallego de Valparaiso will celebrate its Santo patrono Santiago (St James) this coming weekend on July 20th starting with a mass at 12:30 am at the chapel, followed by lunch, festival and traditional ceremonial queimada during the afternoon and evening at the Estadio Español de Valparaiso-Viña del Mar.

El Centro Gallego de Valparaiso celebrará a su Santo patrono, Santiago el Mayor este fin de semana domingo 20, comenzando con una misa a las 12:30 am en la capilla, almuerzo, fiesta y queimada ceremonial durante la tarde en el Estadio Español de Valparaiso-Viña del Mar, Recreo.

Lost in transit

Over 1600 luggage pieces lost in transit or forgotten at the Santiago airport are going to be auctioned tomorrow by airport and Pudahuel municipality authories. Precisely this is what happen to many travellers going away o coming back through multiple airports. These travellers or more often their valuable cargo every so often get lost in transit. Those coming to Valparaiso from Europe have to get through hubs such as Frankfurt, Paris or Madrid whereas those coming from North America get through other hubs such as New York, Atlanta, Miami or L.A. Finally the traveller and their belongings arrive to Santiago and from there travel to their cities north, south or to the seashore like Valparaiso.
So it was our experience last year returning with banda celtamericana from an UK tour. Regrettably, the airlines that took us back to Chile (Lufthansa and Aircomet) lost a good portion of our luggage (9 pieces) and it took to them over a month to get 5 of these pieces back to us. The remaining 4 pieces containing mostly musical instruments never appeared (nunca más se supo). So when we heard the news about this luggage exhibition prior to the public auction we had to give it a last chance. The airline operators are of no avail to find our stuff so maybe it might be resting with this bunch to be auctioned. We weren't fortunate enough our stuff was not visible there, but we felt sorry for the many who like us lost thir luggage.... there was even a Gibson J185 EC, a wonderful and pricy guitar (see below), we presume originally belonging to some musician that still should be regretting its lost.

The uruguayan troupe Bosquimanos Koryak brings to Valparaíso “El truco de Olej”, a dark play showing some kind of doll Circus mixing magic, humour and poetry. This play is going to be staged next friday 11th and saturday 12th at the Municipal theater (Pedro Montt/Uruguay).
“El truco de Olej” is a play staged using dollies awaking human feelings within a ludic world where there are no impossible movements. The plot is developed within a circus, the perfect excuse to show the acts of this play.
